STOP Illegal Dumping

Writer's picture: Lake AssociationLake Association

Further to our Blog Post on May 11, 2024, concerns of two Illegal Dumping sites which were raised from the community have been confirmed by the Municipality that both sites were on Crown Land. The Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry made a site visit to assess the extent of the Illegal Dumping. Site 1 across from Lake St. Peter Waste Site had significant waste from upholstered furniture, commercial tires, fluorescent lights, batteries, construction material, lumber, tree branches, whole trees and much more.

July 15 the MNRF Crews made a start at cleaning this area taking away 6 trailer loads and 7 truck loads. It was A LOT and there is still much more remaining. Thank you to Hastings Highlands for accommodating by allowing use of the Lake St. Peter Waste site.

Future plan for this site and the 2nd site off Lake St. Peter Rd. may require the help of MNRF FIRE CREWS and would be a winter project.

Signage to prohibit dumping will soon be at both sites.

Share this information that dumping garbage anywhere other than in designated waste facilities is hazardous and can result in significant fines. The illusion that is it ok to dump trees and brush isn’t safe as it poses a fire hazard. Should a fire start embers can travel up to 2km and start a fire in other forested areas or on your property.

Thank you to the MNRF crew for a quick response to this issue!

REMAINING BRUSH to be dealt with at a later date:

NEW tree (green) limbs continue to be dumped.

The nature of Illegal Dumping is that its never just brush!

What is a Tipping Fee and why Hastings Highlands recovers costs?
